Aside from sheer determination and moxie, innovation in air power is arguably the main reason why the Allies found victory over the Axis Powers in World War II. Among the American planes that are the most notable is the Lockheed P-38 LIGHTNING combat jet, which was intensely feared by the enemy for the way it could slice through the sky at high altitudes while still maneuvering and performing with ease thanks to the turbosuperchargers in each engine, which also gave the plane a relatively quiet approach. Introduced in 1941, it was responsible for some 1,857 victories and was the only American fighter plane to be in production throughout the country’s involvement in the War, after which the P-38 was retired from service.
Today, Luminox, an American tool watch brand known for its involvement with the U.S. Military over the past 30 years, has unveiled its Air Pilot P-38 LIGHTNING® watch to honor the legendary fighter jet. For starters, the stylish timepiece features a GMT function as an homage to the pilots who served our country over 80 years ago. The interior dial ring allows the wearer to keep track of different time zones when traveling.
Housed inside the 42mm steel case is a Swiss-made quartz movement with up to 50 months of battery life. Available in three dial options, the timepiece is built for visibility and clarity, sporting Luminox Light Technology which will provide illumination on the dial for 25 years. Likewise, the face displays a nod to the B-Uhr navigation instruments of the 1940s, featuring a pair of dots on either side of an upwards-facing triangle at the 12 o’clock position so you can easily orient yourself to read the time at a quick glance.
As part of its official partnership with iconic aerospace engineering firm Lockheed Martin, Luminox is releasing the Air Pilot P-38 LIGHTNING® alongside the CONTELLATION® pilot watch. Both selections are now available from Luminox’s website starting at $595.
