This past August, G-SHOCK devotees across North America and Europe were blessed with yet another purpose-built addition to the reputable MUDMASTER collection. This time, the iconic brand, known for their beastly watches built to withstand some of the toughest environments on the planet, opted for a bit of a smaller build to help up the utilitarian value in conjunction with a color theme similar to those found on armored cars and other heavy equipment. Seems appropriate, we know, considering how resilient we found this edition to be in the field — especially in a more aquatic environment.
We’ve always been fascinated by the MUDMASTER lineup, which is why reviewing these one-of-a-kind timepieces is quite the thrill. There’s practically nothing that can’t get in the way to harm these watches — trust us, we tried — so we’re pleased to say the all-new G-SHOCK MUDMASTER GG1000-1A8 was a treat to test out and fun to sport. Continue reading for our full synopsis.
The Look
A Purpose Built Timepiece
Even before we put the new MUDMASTER GG1000-1A8 to the test, right from the get-go its purpose-built design become obvious — leaving a lasting impression on us. Upon first glance, two features jumped out. First, the handsome colorway G-SHOCK opted to adorn the timepiece with was one we hadn’t come across in any previous MASTER OF G lineups, so we thought it suited the durable nature of the watch quite well. Second, the five large checkered-surface pushers on either side of the watch exuded a notion a reassurance that this was indeed built to take a beating — whether it be underwater or in the bayou.
Which leads us to the watch bezel. Here, were have a muscular-looking unit that hosts a surprisingly soft feel to it. However, don’t fall victim to the falsehood that a soft or rubbery-feeling bezel will easily dent or peel. On the contrary, G-SHOCK utilizes an extraordinarily tough material when building these timepieces so there’s no need to worry about babying this thing.
The Build
Sturdy, Durable, And Lightweight
From here, you don’t get a rugged and reliable watch without some serious consideration into its construction. And for us, that’s where the magic of G-SHOCK really shines through. In terms of overall size, we were actually pleased to see that the MUDMASTER GG1000-1A8 measured in a little smaller than its predecessors — at 55.3 mm wide — allowing for a more casual appearance and wearing experience both in and out of the water. The causal elements stop there though since this is anything but an ordinary timepiece. You don’t get a rugged and reliable watch without some serious consideration into its construction.
We’re talking, of course, about the rugged construction that makes this one hell of a durable watch. Features such as their iconic Mud Resist technology that is seamlessly infused into the MUDMASTER’s construction alongside multiple gaskets used on the internal pipes to help guide the watch’s buttons and shafts while keeping dirt and grime out are just some of the key construction features we found incredibly handy in the field. These, combined with an almost tactile strap, will certainly come in handy for anyone consistently placed in hard environments or working in or around heavy machinery.
Functionality
Taking Tactical To The Next Level
And it’s the combination of such a build and functionality that makes the MUDMASTER GG1000-1A8 such a valuable piece for those who need something reliable and tough as hell in the field. We found that even elements such as kelp, saltwater, and sand were no match for the watch’s impenetrable build and that the stock functionality was also one to admire. To start, the MUDMASTER hosts the brand’s Twin Sensor capability. Meaning, with the simple push of a button, current temperature updates are provided while additional useful features such as a compass and 200 meters of water resistance came in handy as well.We found that even elements such as kelp, saltwater, and sand were no match for the watch’s impenetrable build and that the stock functionality was one to admire.
Additionally, we can’t rule out the watch’s impressive resistance to dirt, dust, and grime in congruence with Neo-Brite luminous hands and markers for enhanced visibility in low light — a key feature we found invaluable while underwater or in dimly-lit areas. The MUDMASTER GG1000-1A8 also comes equipped with world time (48 cities and UTC to be exact), a 1/100 second stopwatch, 60-minute countdown timer, five daily alarms, low battery alert, and an auto LED Super Illuminator blacklight with afterglow on demand. Finally, durable Japanese quartz movement keeps things ticking right along smoothly no matter what.
Time's Up
A G-SHOCK Worthy Of The MUDMASTER Name.
In terms of overall wearability, functionality, and durable design, we were incredibly pleased with this newest addition to the MASTER of G lineup. Our takeaway? A fun watch to wear that houses cool and handy features, is incredibly well built, and clearly made for those who prefer an active lifestyle or work in a challenging environment where ordinary watches would surely falter. It’s a timepiece intended to endure years of use and abuse while the subtle gray, black, and blue colorway add a noteworthy style element to the entire package.
What’s left is something that’s both utilitarian and rugged enough to stand up to just about anything thrown its way. From star athletes to special operations, military and law enforcement personnel to field-ready backcountry enthusiasts, the MASTER of G MUDMASTER GG1000-1A8 watch is a confident timepiece that won’t let you down in times you need it most.
