Over the last few years, Volkswagen has been developing its forthcoming ID. Series models — a fully electric next-gen lineup of vehicles based on the shared MEB (Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten) platform. And after debuting the production version of the ID. 4, VW has now rolled out the next mass-production addition to its all-electric lineup with the hotly-anticipated ID. Buzz.

A modernized take on the iconic Type 2 — or “Kombi” — van, the ID. Buzz is a production version of VW’s concept that was originally unveiled in 2017. Powering this modernized Microbus is a 150-kW (201-hp) electric motor that generates 229ft-lbs of torque and draws from an 82kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack that affords a range of around 250 miles and can receive a 5% to 80% charge in as little as 30 minutes. Equipped with a rear-wheel-drive setup, the ID. Buzz also boasts a 117.6” wheelbase, 39.6 cubic feet of cargo space, a 36.4’ turning radius, an 8.5-second 0-60mph time, and a top speed that’s been electronically limited to 90mph. The new van also comes loaded with a host of advanced driver assist systems including front and lane assists, adaptive cruise control, blindspot monitoring, side, travel, and emergency park assists, and area view.

Fitted with LED lighting all around, the exterior of the ID. Buzz takes ample influence from VW’s legendary Type 2 Microbus, delivering a futuristic interpretation of the van that leaves little to no doubt as to the model that inspired it. The interior of the car sports an equally modern design, with eco-friendly upholstery, floormats, headliner, and seat covers made from partially recycled materials, a 10” digital cockpit display paired with a 10” infotainment system, and a 10-color ambient lighting setup, all as standard.

Made at the marque’s main commercial vehicles plant in Hannover, Germany, the 2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric van is slated for a Euro-market release in October ahead of a North American debut the following year. VW has also stated that the ID. Buzz will grow smarter and more sophisticated over time, with the aim of rolling out a fully autonomous version of the van by 2025. Pricing for the VW ID. Buzz starts at £40,000 (~$58,975).
