Prior to the launch of the iPhone 8, a conceptual rendering of a transparent-screen-equipped Apple smartphone starting making its rounds on the internet, and though the unofficial concept never saw the light of production, there’s no doubt that the tech world was thoroughly infatuated with the futuristic crystalline display. Fast forward several years later to today and China’s Xiaomi Inc has now taken the idea of a pellucid display and applied it to a full-size smart OLED TV.
Released to coincide with the global electronics company’s 10th anniversary, the new see-through smart TV screen has been dubbed the Mi TV Lux OLED Transparent Edition. Measuring 55” across and sporting an ultra-low-profile 5.7mm thick housing, the screen plays the part of a normal cutting-edge OLED TV with a 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Atmos support, AI Master Smart Engine, 1ms response time, and 10-bit color depth. However, when the screen is turned off, the display reverts to an entirely transparent state, resembling a piece of glass. Priced at $7,198, the Xiaomi Mi TV Lux OLED Transparent Edition goes on sale on August 16th, though, at least for the time being, is restricted to the Chinese market.
