Voyager Golden Record: 40th Anniversary Edition
When the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes were launched in the 1970s their primary objectives were much like any other probe. They were tasked with gathering data on moons, planets, and their respective electro-magnetic fields, all while sending photos back to earth. Its secondary goal, however, was much more grand; communicating who, what, and where we are to any thing that may eventually come across it as it traveled outside of our solar system. Now, thanks to the team at Ozma Records, you can own a replica of the multi-media message Carl Sagan and others helped craft for extra-terrestrial eyes and ears.
This project of communicating our essential humanity to a set of beings whose capacity to see or understand was (and is) completely unknown to us presented a difficult design challenge to the folks at NASA. Their eventual answer was essentially a package of audio and images, all of which are in this record box set. It consists of three translucent gold records, a book containing the images included on the Voyager, a digital audio download, and a fine art print. It’s as much a work of art as any . Prices start at $98. [Purchase]
