Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR Concept

The Volkswagen Golf has been a stalwart in the sphere of hatchbacks since ’74, when VW first started manufacturing it. Back then, it was known as a modest family vehicle. But since the days of disco, the VW Golf has certainly undergone a dramatic shift, from its original, boxy and unassuming frame, to that of a smooth-contoured speedster, even competing in the illustrious Twin Peaks Hill Climb in the 1980s. Far from humble, the concept newly released by VW for the VW Golf GTI TCR promises to make its predecessors proud – and simultaneously put them to shame – with its flashy new specs.

Boasting a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 286 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, the Golf GT can reach up to 164 mph (if you opt to remove the speed governor). Built with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transaxle allows you stay in the proper RPM threshold, and a limited-slip differential keeps traction tight, helping it to make any hill climbs of its own. Right now, VW is calling the new GT concept a “study,” but there are plans to bring the car to manufacture by the year’s end.
