While they have a wide range of product offerings, Vans are mainly known for their ubiquitous canvas skateboarding shoes like the Old Skool, Authentics, and Slip-On. But now the brand is expanding into a new footwear space with an insulated waterproof sneaker-boot hybrid that looks a whole lot like Vans’ first true hiking shoe — even if they’re not calling it that.
The UltraRange EXO Hi GORE-TEX MTE-2 is, by our measure, the most outdoor-ready shoe that Vans has ever produced. Vans says the shoes can stand up to rain, mud, and snow, and one look at the specs reveals that they’re not telling fairytales. The shoes have a GORE-TEX Invisible Fit waterproof membrane that sits below an upper made from water-repellent suede, textile, and synthetics. The outsole is made from All-Trac, Vans’ new cold-weather rubber compound that provides grippy traction in all weather conditions. The shoes feature zoned Primaloft Insulation over the toe, tongue, and collar to keep your feet warm in colder climates, along with an UltraCush EVA midsole that provides lightweight cushioning when walking long distances. Style-wise, these UltraRanges look about what you would imagine Vans hiking boots to look like, with a bit of a “hi-top adventure skateboarding shoe” vibe going on. Available in two colorways — all-black or dachshund (light brown) and black — the UltraRange EXO Hi GORE-TEX MTE-2 are available now from Vans for $170.
