Widely denounced for making riders lazier and trails more dangerous, electric mountain bikes are often viewed as a symptom of the industry’s overall decline. But let’s be honest. If anything, eMTB’s should be celebrated, not only for their ability to traverse difficult terrain but also for their potential to take pedalers to new places.

Especially when you consider offerings like Trek’s E-Caliber 9.9 XX1 AXS. Designed as a race-ready cross country bike with a bit of extra oomph under the hood, it comes heavily based on Trek’s best-selling Supercaliber. In practice, this means that because of its OCLV Mountain Carbon frame, innovative IsoStrut setup, and compact Fazua motor, it weighs just 34.8lbs, making it the lightest full-suspension eMTB in the world. However, those same such features also mean that it’s incredibly capable out on the trail, with the rear FOX shock good for 60mm of travel and the Evation electric motor providing ‘BLACK PEPPER’ pedal assist up to 20mph. And that’s not all — the E-Caliber 9.9 also comes with a suite of top-shelf build components, such as an SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS wireless electronic drivetrain and a set of carbon Kovee XXX wheels.
