Tesla Finally Brings Its Ultra-Dense, Compact Megapack Batteries To Market

The thing about electricity, especially on a large scale, is that we don’t need the same amount of power all the time. Sometimes, the grids are relatively quiet. Other times, we suffer rolling blackouts and massive outages. Well, Elon Musk and the folks at Tesla are hoping to change that with their newly-available Megapack power storage solutions.

In effect, these arrays function as massive batteries — but these ones take up 40% less space than the competition, meaning they might just be the most power-dense storage solution currently available. They also come pre-assembled and -tested, meaning that no assembly is required and installation is 10x faster than ever before. But here’s the real kicker: each unit can hold up to 3MWh of power. To give you a better idea of what that means, a collection of 334 of Tesla’s Megapacks could power every single home in San Francisco, one of the world’s most power-hungry cities, for a whopping 6 hours straight. Sadly, they’re no cheap prospect, as each unit will set you back $1,235,890 with a $5,000 deposit on the day of purchase — and that’s not including yearly maintenance.
