Thankfully, this idea is just a concept for right now, because we don’t think the world is quite ready for a flying car just yet, nevermind one that is unmanned at the wheel. But there’s a concept floating around out there, called the Terrafugia TF-X, that is just that: a driver-less flying car.
It sounds like something right out of a sci-fi movie, but Terrafugia, founded in 2006, is on a mission to bring their TF-X to the masses. The TF-X is a fixed wing aircraft that is street legal and uses electric ground drive and electric power assist on take off and landing. It uses computer controlled flight, with the only user input necessary being the location of where they’d want to go. It has a cruise speed of 200 MPH, and uses a 300 horsepower engine. It also has a 500 mile range. The TF-X transfers from airplane to car in mere seconds. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely we’ll see this concept hit the light of day anytime soon, given all of the recent publicity surrounding the accidents by Google’s self-driving car. Still, it’s a cool concept, right?
