Turntables have been a staple of music production for the past few decades, and with the resurgence of DJ-oriented culture, it’s no secret that avid producers have been searching for high-quality offerings. In the past, Technics was one of the most trusted names in professional turntable gear — and now, they’ve broken their ten-year hiatus with the release of the brand’s most advanced technology to date, the SL-1200MK7.

The SL-1200MK7 improves on some of the most obvious downfalls of the SL-1200 line, utilizing a coreless direct drive motor that achieves stable rotation and provides a predictable, powerful torque. In the past, a phenomenon called “cogging” would occur thanks to an irregularity in the table’s rotation — but through the use of the coreless drive, two-layer structure platter (for improved vibration dampening), and a high rigidity cabinet that allows for improved external vibration control, these hiccups have been isolated and ironed out. As a result, exceedingly crisp sound quality and improved pitch control allow users to obtain even greater tracking performance during production. The SL-1200MK7’s all-black design brings an aesthetically pleasing silhouette to the professional device, while reversible playback and customizable illumination that aims to set a new standard for the turntable market — available in May with an expected retail price of $1,200.
