Though it certainly has a habit of testing even the strongest friendships, Hasbro’s Monopoly is inarguably one of the greatest and most successful board games of all time. The clever economic-inspired pastime, which was first created in 1903, has seen literal hundreds of special edition iterations, but the original has – comparatively – changed very little since that time. Now, however, a major change is coming with the introduction of a new game piece: the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The result of an historical 100-country 4.3 million-entry online vote (the largest user-driven campaign in the brand’s history), the Tyrant Lizard is now an official member of the classic board game’s token lineup – alongside seasoned classics such as the battleship, car, top hat, and scottie dog. To make way for the enormous dinosaur and two other new pieces (a penguin and a rubber duck), the thimble, wheelbarrow, and boot have been retired. These new pieces will make their first appearance on store shelves starting this fall at a retail price of $19.99.
