Ever since the world got a taste for its whisky, Japan has been dealing with a shortage the likes of which few could have predicted. For though the island nation’s spirits were once a niche obscurity appreciated only by those who were in the know, today they’re among the most highly desired libations on the market. As such, big names like Nikka and Suntory have had to severely restrict their supply in order to weather the storm.
But with the announcement of its limited edition ‘Blossom Harmony’ whisky, Suntory is taking a step in the right direction. Comprising a blend of raw and sakura wood-aged sake, it’s the first-ever Hibiki to be finished in cherry blossom barrels. What results is a whisky that features a floral scent on the nose with a mild palate and a rich yet refreshing finish. Each bottle comes with a label that includes a flowered design complemented by “glossy red” accents. And when you consider that it comes in a special gift box complete with ‘Blossom Harmony’ branding, it makes for a fitting first release in 2021. It’ll be available on May 25th for ¥8,000 or about $80.
