With the yacht industry increasingly regarded as an outsized contributor to global warming, some in the field are undertaking the herculean task of making seafaring vessels more environmentally friendly. At the forefront of this movement is Sunreef Yachts and their Eco Yacht range, with the line’s latest model, the Sunreef 80 Eco, being especially impressive.
The Sunreef 80 Eco is a sailing catamaran that also makes extensive use of solar energy. Covering nearly every visible part of the yacht are 164 square meters of solar panels applied to the mast, boom, superstructure, and hull sides. These panels provide up to 32kWp, enough to replace two generators while also reducing weight. They feed energy to an ultralight 300kW battery bank that’s 30% lighter than the industry average, which in turn outputs power to two 182kW electric motors for times when the wind is lacking. The interior and exterior appointments are fully customizable, with a range of luxury options available in ethically-sourced and eco-responsible materials.
