In a world full of mind-numbing toys that are mass-produced, mundane, and completely unengaging, it’s difficult to find a promising past-time that’s both fun and intellectually stimulating. The team over at Sphero, a robotics education and manufacturing company from Boulder, Colorado, hopes to change all that with their latest release — the BOLT Robotic Ball.

The BOLT is truly unique, utilizing an interesting spherical design that you can use to hone your programming and coding skills — all under the guise of “fun.” The innovative Sphero Edu App allows you to program the robotic ball through the use of sketches, Scratch blocks, and even Javascript — boasting a completely programmable 8×8 LED matrix that reacts through the materialization of animations and a real-time data display. It has a slew of code-driven sensors that you can learn to operate, from Movement, Infrared, Compass, Light Sensor, Gyroscope, and Accelerometer tech, all the way to specific motor operation. The BOLT is completely durable, featuring a waterproof enclosure and inductive charging that allows for over two hours of productive, interactive, and stimulative learning.
