The Space Exploration Auction

Just a month prior to the 50th anniversary of Apollo 8, Sotheby’s will be holding their second annual Space Exploration Auction. If you’re a stargazer who’s entranced by the endless depths of the universe, this is your chance to own a piece of space history.

There are several items going up for auction, but the most unique offering of the lineup has to be the moon rocks, which were returned to Earth by the Soviet Luna-16 Mission in 1970. They are the only known documented moon rocks available for private ownership. The moon rocks are expected to sell for close to $1 million. Another piece of the collection worth keeping an eye on is the complete Gemini Spacesuit, including the helmet made for Pete Conrad along with space boots made for Frank Borman. The space attire is expected to fetch anywhere between $100,000 to $150,000. The Space Exploration collection also includes the voice recorder flown in the Vostok-6, the Soviet LK-3 Lunar Lander model, and Apollo 12 Astronaut Alan Bean’s painting entitled “A Nice Place to Visit.” The auction will be held on November 29.
