One of the countless effects of the ongoing global pandemic has been a marked rise in the popularity of online auctions, as well as the prestige of some of the lots being offered via these internet-only sales. The latest thoroughly elite liquor sale comes to us from Sotheby’s, which is preparing for its forthcoming second installment of its “Ultimate Whisky Collection.”
Comprised of more than 300 seriously-noteworthy lots, The Ultimate Whisky Collection II sale includes a diverse variety of world-class spirits, including a 50-year-old “The Last Cask” Bowmore Black, a 1963 vintage from The Balvenie, numerous extremely top-shelf Laphroaig bottles, an original release half-century-year old Glenfiddich, and several elite Japanese whiskies. Headlining the auction is “ The Macallan Red Collection,” six single malt bottles consisting of 40-year, 50-year, 60-year, 71-year, 74-year, and 78-year vintages. Each bottle comes in a European oak presentation box and wears ultra-limited edition labels from Spanish artist, Javi Aznarez, who also signed each bottle. The Macallan Red Collection is expected to fetch between approximately $260,000 and $1,000,000 when the sale goes live on October 31.
