Sony’s First Drone Will Take Mirrorless Photography To New Heights For $9K+

After first teasing it nearly a year ago, Sony has fully unveiled their first drone… and it is decidedly impressive. The Airpeak S1 is aimed squarely at professionals, as it’s the world’s smallest drone that’s capable of carrying an Alpha series full-frame mirrorless camera.

The Sony Airpeak S1 boasts a Sony-developed propulsion device and flight control system, as well as real-time 3D spatial awareness achieved through stereo cameras and a vision-sensing processor. This all helps the Airpeak S1 fly smartly and avoid obstacles autonomously. The drone has a top speed of 55.9 mph, will remain stable in winds up to 44.7 mph, and has a flight time of up to 22 minutes without a payload or 12 minutes with one. Most of the time, you’ll be using it with a payload — probably a Sony Alpha series camera. The drone has been engineered to work specifically with the brand’s high-end mirrorless cameras, and both the drone and equipped camera can be controlled — separately if desired — through the Airpeak app. Sony plans on launching the Airpeak S1 drone in September, and the expected retail price is expected to be around 1,000,000 Japanese yen before tax (~$9,142).

Purchase: $9,142+
