Surrounded by a desert garden, the 340-square-foot grain silo is a tranquil home tucked away in Phoenix, Arizona. KAISERWORKS transformed the cylinder into a holistic retreat that immerses you into nature and connects you with the city.
From the transformed corrugated steel-wall grain silo, you can see the heart of the city from the desert isle’s 17-foot slot window. With a cozy 18-foot diameter and 26-foot high ceilings, this abode that’s only 700 feet from the tallest building, yet surrounded by lush greenery, captures the best of both worlds. To preserve a peaceful environment, KAISERWORKS even built subterranean air ducts to dilute mechanical noise from the air conditioning system that would be heightened by the steel walls. In addition, there’s also an operable skylight, providing another option to cool down. The house also features an in-wall projector that casts a 13-foot-wide image, an outdoor shower, custom fabricated doors, built-in furniture, and commissioned art. KAISERWORKS is currently designing a kit version of the silo house as well.
