Anniversary watches are always an interesting way to drum up interest from wristwear aficionados, and while most celebrate unique happenings within a company’s past, few are direct homages to the lifetime achievements of their creator. This isn’t the case with Seiko’s recently-announced Limited-Edition Astron, which pays tribute to its founder and forefather, Kintaro Hattori.
To celebrate the 160th birthday of its creator, Seiko has opted to introduce a limited, 2,500-piece run of its sleek Astron GPS watch. It adopts a formidable 42.8mm, scratch-resistant titanium case, subtle gold accents, and a black Zirconia ceramic bezel, providing profound integrity, utility, and style to its wearer. Inside, an accurate Caliber 5X53 movement keeps everything in order; but what makes the watch interesting is its intricate remembrances of Hattori. Its bezel features sixteen different facets — one for each decade since Kintaro’s birth. At the rear of the watch, the founder’s motto, “One step ahead of the rest,” complements its engraved, limited-run demarcator, as well as the trademark “S” that was registered to the brand in the year 1900.
