Only the year after Nintendo changed the face of video gaming forever with their Game Boy, Sega unveiled their challenger to the throne, the Game Gear. Complete with a full-color screen and better graphical capabilities, the Game Gear outshined the Game Boy in many ways, but it never quite caught fire in the same way. Still, it holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers, which is why the announcement of the Game Gear Micro is so exciting.
Styled to look like the original Game Gear, this retro redux is a good deal smaller — so small, in fact, it can fit in the palm of your hand. It still has a full-color screen, though it’s far smaller at just 1.15″ across. It also comes with a built-in speaker and headphone jack, a charging cable (and AAA battery compatibility), and a quartet of built-in classic games — ranging from Sonic the Hedgehog to Gunstar Heroes and more. Here’s the catch: each of the four available colorways comes with four different built-in games, so you’d have to buy all four $50 Game Gears to get all 16 games. If you do buy the four-pack, however, you also get a bonus magnifying glass to make playing on that tiny screen a bit easier. It’s available in Japan now, but there’s no word on US availability.
