For those who are unfamiliar, Roli is responsible for making some very cool and intuitive style-forward electronic instruments – take, for example, their Music Blocks. While their newest release isn’t exactly a foray into the unfamiliar (its based on a classic synthesizer keyboard), it’s certainly a bit more compact, portable, and affordable. It’s called the Seaboard Block.
They are calling it a “super powered keyboard,” which is a shockingly accurate description. This 24-key instrument is portable and wireless, has a battery life of up to 10 hours of continuous play, and functions both as a stand-alone keyboard or can be integrated with Roli’s other blocks. It also has USB-C connectivity, full MIDI compatibility, and connects to your iPhone (and the brand’s controller app) via Bluetooth. Our favorite feature, however, is the inclusion of Roli’s new 5D technology: dynamic controls that affect the way the instrument sounds by the way you touch it, be it by sliding, gliding, striking, pressing, or lifting your fingers over the keys. This miniature magical modular instrument retails for $300.
