It’s been said that in the future, cars will do just as us drivers do. They will learn everyday, getting better and better until they’ve mastered the complex task that is modern-day private transport. It’s only a matter of time, and that time may be sooner than many of us think. Behold the Rinspeed Budii, an autonomous vehicle based on the BMW i3 EV.
Using a telescoping laser scanner extending from the roof of the vehicle paired with a Kappa Optronics camera, this thing is able to deliver and navigate a 3D perspective map of the surrounding terrain. The entire car’s system from the entertainment to the safety and service functions are controlled via the user’s smartwatch or smartphone. While drivers are welcome to sit back and relax during autopilot, the robot arm will hand off the steering wheel to an actual human being (yourself or passenger) if you’d like to take back control. Check out the video below to get a closer look at the Rinspeed Budii in action.
