Riddell X Carbon 3D-Printed Football Helmet Liner
The number of concussions suffered by NFL players has increased steadily since the league started to share the data in 2012 with the 2017 season marking the highest number of concussions recorded. Riddell and Carbon have collaborated to build a 3D-printed football helmet liner for upgraded impact absorption, giving football players of all levels more protection during brain-rattling blows.
The liners have an elastomeric lattice structure built from a custom resin material. After an impact remolds the shape of the liner, it can revert back to its original form. Riddell and Carbon plan to make the liners fully customizable so they can fit a player’s head shape perfectly. At this time, the 3D-printed football helmet liner will only be made for the Riddell SpeedFlex Precision Diamond helmet, which was used by a few NFL players last season. The SpeedFlex Precision Diamond helmet will available this year at the elite level.
