Power Rangers Dark & Gritty Short Film

Feb 25, 2015

You knew the Power Rangers were cheesy when even 7-year-olds referred to it as one of their “guilty pleasures.” But a new and very unofficial short film does something the world thought was undoable: It makes the Power Rangers gritty.

Movie producer Adi Shankar recruited director Joseph Khan to reimagine the colorful, karate kicking crew as deeply disturbed adults, and Khan delivers a dark, violent, obscenity-filled 14-minute roller-coaster ride. Adding even more shock to the whole thing is James Van Der Beek’s (Dawson’s Creek) starring role. Despite the serious effort here, Shankar insists the film is in no way a pitch for a full-length feature film. Meanwhile, the official Power Rangers movie remains in development, with a tentative 2016 release date attached to it.
