Spending time in the outdoors this time of year can be both rewarding and frustrating. Rewarding in the sense that we’re enjoying more fresh air and extracurricular activities thanks to the longer days, frustrating in the sense that annoying insects – such as mosquitos – tend to become a nuisance during these warmer months. However, there appears to be a solution on the horizon. Say hello to the Photonic Fence – a laser-powered mosquito zapper.

Using proprietary software that boasts the ability to identify certain characteristics of a mosquito such as wing beat frequency, shape, size, airspeed and sex, the Photonic Fence then tracks the insect in flight, makes sure no human or other animal targets are in the way, then zaps the mosquito out of existence with a laser. It’s quite literally a visual fence set up around the permitter of the device that tracks any and all invading pests trafficking in and out of the area. Could be the perfect addition to a summer BBQ, sports outing, or any number of outdoor activities plagued by these disease-carrying insects.
