While there’s no shortage of legendary names tied to motorsport, few if any carry the same weight as Steve McQueen or Paul Newman. While both were best known for their illustrious acting careers, passion for racing, and impeccable sense of style, the McQueen and Newman names are also linked to the horological world, with watches previously owned by either of the two Hollywood legends commanding an enormous amount at auction.
And despite the relatively scant likelihood of this occurring, there are currently watches owned by both McQueen and Newman that are slated to soon go under the hammer at Phillips’ RAING PULSE Auction in New York City on December 12. Amongst numerous other elite timepieces, the sale includes Paul Newman’s “Big Red” Ref. 6263 Rolex Daytona, complete with “Drive Slowly – Joanne” (Newman’s wife) inscribed on the case-back. One of Steve McQueen’s personally-owned 1969 Heuer Monaco Ref. 1133, which was famously worn by McQueen in the 1970 film, Le Mans, and is expected to fetch upwards of $1,000,000.
