Petra Island by Frank Lloyd Wright

We once thought that buying an island was a kind of fantasy — something reserved for Bond villains or Saudi princes. Then, we came across this listing for Petra Island in Mahopac, New York.

This small island located in a lake just north of Manhattan boasts more than just trees and beautiful views. It is also home to a compound designed by Frank Lloyd Wright himself. The buildings are located on the far edge of the 11-acre island and are made up of a main home, two guest houses, a tea house, and a dock. In classic Wright style the houses feature low, clean lines and incorporate the natural environment into the space almost seamlessly. The home has 6 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, and somewhat unsurprisingly, a helipad. And why not? If you’re buying a private island it is almost obligatory that you top the whole thing off with a personal helicopter. And thankfully for the yet unnamed Wolf of Wall Street who will likely purchases this place, it is only a 15 minute helicopter ride to the city.

Purchase: $14,920,000
