Paul Newman’s 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

Everyone knows that Steve McQueen was the King of Cool, but he’s not the only hot shot actor from back in the day. In fact, Paul Newman is right up there; a legend in his own right for his acting chops, charitable contributions, and taste in everything from sharp attire to classic cars – like this 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing he once owned.

Purchased by the star from its original owner in 1957, it’s unclear how long Newman owned this beautiful vehicle – only that he left it in California when he moved to Connecticut to start a family in the 1960s. Since that time, this classic coupe (one of the first 100 Gullwings ever produced) has changed hands several times before ending up in the possession of Classic Sports Leicht – a Paris-based workshop and dealership – in 2012. Following that, the car underwent a 6,000-hour restoration process to get it back to original factory specs. There is one unfortunate part to this story, however: the car has already been purchased and is now under the care of a lucky new mystery owner.
