Outside House By Float Architects

When you move to a place because of its natural beauty, do you really want to shut it out with four walls and a roof? One native Hawaiian didn’t think that sounded like such a good idea. Instead, he had Float Architects build something they’re calling the Outside House.

These two structures are located on either edge of a 300-year old lava flow and make up the bare essentials of living. The first building is constructed from wood and polycarbonate that shelter a small bedroom. The bed inside the building is positioned westward to catch the first light of the day, but otherwise remains cool for mid-day naps or reading. On the other side of the lava flow is an open air kitchen and shower that looks out over the Pacific and towards the neighboring island of Kahoolawae. The home was only finished in 2017 but has already received awards for its inventive design.
