Over the last few years there’s been an increased focus on minimizing production waste and maximizing sustainability in manufacturing, and while we’ve already seen some seriously impressive recyclable running shoe models from a number of prominent activewear brands, On Running has just taken the premise to the next level with the debut of its “Cyclon” running shoe.
Constructed from a single cut of dye-free, geometric-weave fabric that’s made from more than 50% sustainably grown and harvested castor beans, the Cyclon is 100% recyclable and can be returned to On after its lifecycle—which is rated for around 250-miles of use—to be up-cycled into a new pair of shoes. Weighing only 200 grams (or 0.44lbs), the Cyclon is a competition-grade high-performance running shoe that boasts an 8mm heel-toe drop and On’s signature energy-returning Speedboard. Aside from the heightened degree of sustainability, what really makes the Cyclon unique is the fact it’s not sold, but rather “rented” to customers via a monthly subscription model, in which the shoe can be returned in exchange for a new pair. Available for preorder now, the On Running Cyclon and its subscription service are scheduled to go live in the Fall of 2021, with monthly pricing set at $30.
