Nikon’s world-renowned reputation for making premium cameras has made them the go-to brand for aficionados throughout the photography space. In particular, their Z Series cameras have set the standard for what mirrorless cameras are capable of. After over 100 years, the company continues to innovate on their stellar line of products with the release of their most powerful mirrorless camera yet, the Z 9.

The new Z 9 is a revamped version of the Tokyo-based camera maker’s flagship, and it is already being touted as their fastest, most powerful camera ever. It’s built around a 45.7MP FX-format stacked CMOS sensor that features a powerful AF system with subject detection. This new subject detection system automatically tracks the eyes of any subject you’re focusing on, be it human, dog, or birds. The enhanced AF system can even track the eyes of subjects that are covered by hair or glasses to ensure the perfect shot every time. Coupled with their latest, groundbreaking EXPEED 7 processing engine, the Z 9 is able to perform autofocus and auto-exposure calculations at 120 fps without a hitch. Most impressively, the XPEED 7 enables the Z 9 to shoot at shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 of a second with minimal distortion and virtually no sound. Moreover, the added processing power enables the Z 9 to shoot ultra-high-defintion 8k footage. What’s better, Nikon built the Z 9 to include deep learning, so the camera can seamlessly lock onto fast-moving subjects and autofocus on them while they are in motion. The Z 9 also features a Starlight Mode that allows photographers to capture clear stills in the darkest of settings.

The Z 9 sports Nikon’s first 4-axis tilting touchscreen, a 20% smaller construction than its predecessor, and has a new RAW format that maintains its high-quality resolution at 1/3 of its file size. To say that the Z 9 is an engineering marvel would be a massive understatement. Nikon has yet to reveal the Z 9’s release date, but it will retail for $5,500.
