On paper, hydrogen fuel cells are a game-changing technology, with the ability to power zero-emissions vehicles with incredible range, performance, and efficiency. In practice, however, re-fueling hydrogen cells can be immensely difficult, often requiring certified experts to handle this zero-carbon fuel source — not to mention a largely non-existent infrastructure. Electric vehicle startup NamX is looking to change this reality with the debut of what the fledgling French firm has dubbed the HUV prototype.

Thus far unveiled in prototype form, this hydrogen-powered SUV — or “HUV” — is the world’s first car to be partially powered by a removable hydrogen tank system. Capable of affording a range of around 500 miles, this patented system utilizes a main tank that’s supplemented via half-a-dozen removable tanks set in the SUV’s rear tailgate. Aiming to assist in the large-scale deployment of hydrogen for private vehicles, NAMX’s plans also include the creation of an all-new, completely decentralized, on-demand energy distribution model.

NamX’s HUV was penned in collaboration with legendary Italian design house Pininfarina and boasts an unmistakably sleek and muscular appearance, with a wide, crest-shaped grille design surrounded by a crisscrossing LED headlight arrangement. Dual intake and exhaust ports also adorn the fore and aft ends of the vehicle, while a seven-item strip-style LED taillight arrangement occupies the back of the sport utility vehicle. The HUV also rides on an ultra-unique six-arm wheel design.

It’s unclear when exactly NamX plans on bringing its Pininfarina-designed HUV to market, though interested parties can sign up to receive updates on the company’s website.
