In 1992, Midway shook up the gaming world with its release of Mortal Kombat, bringing adult levels of violence to at-home consoles. Acclaimed by critics and loathed by parent and family groups of the era, the franchise’s signature combat and gore has long resonated with fans, giving way to an enormous slew of follow-up hit video game installments, comic book lines, toys, and both animated and live-action movies. Freshly announced for Spring of 2021, Warner Bros. Entertainment has just unveiled the trailer to the latest addition to the MK film franchise, and it looks to include all the hallmark bone-breaking and bloodshed of the original video game as well as its main core group of fighters.
A modern interpretation of the mythical fighting tournament, the new video game movie’s cast will include key individuals such as Kano, Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Jax, and Liu Kang — amongst others — who will be played by Josh Lawson, Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, and Ludi Lin, respectively. What’s more, the 2021 MK movie will also include a host of the fighters’ signature moves, plus no-holds-barred live-action “Fatalities.” Clearly not for the squeamish or faint of heart, the new Mortal Kombat movie is scheduled for a release on April 16, 2021.
