Morgan is a brand that’s proven remarkably steadfast in its resistance to change, continuing to produce the same antiquated open-topped vehicles even as the rest of the automotive industry has forged ahead. With its latest offering, however, the old dog shows that it’s never too late to learn some new tricks.
After all, a ruggedized off-roader — the ‘Plus Four CX-T’ — is the last thing anyone would’ve expected from the Malvern-based manufacturer. And that’s precisely what makes it so great. Created in partnership with Rally Raid UK, the CX-T comes inspired by Morgan’s long history of trials competition. As such, it now rides on a set of EXE-TC coilovers, modified Plus Six wishbones, and some bespoke bushes, resulting in a pretty respectable 9″ of ground clearance. And while it retains the turbocharged 2.0L inline-four and RWD layout of the standard Plus Four, Morgan has given it some side-exit exhaust and a BMW X-Drive electronic differential for improved all-terrain ability. Rounded out by a five-piece underbody protection system, a rally-light-equipped roll-cage, and a host of tough storage containers, it’s made only better by the sight of those burly Maxxis tires shoehorned beneath the wheel arches. Limited to just eight examples, it’ll run you £170,000 (~$240,000).
