It’s hard to believe that Mercedes-Benz’s iconic G-Class vehicles have only been around for the past four decades. Drawing from the timeless pedigree of the company’s early, militaristic vehicles, these luxurious flagship SUVs have helped to bridge the gap between the manufacturer’s modern designs and its deeply-rooted heritage — leading us to believe that the class’ 40th Anniversary is no small milestone.
To commemorate the birthdate of the company’s legendary G-Class, Mercedes-Benz will release three special edition counterparts — each with their own significant deviation from the traditional platform. Dubbed the Stronger Than Time collection, these bolstered variants promise an attractive boost in horsepower and torque, 64 customizable interiors, and 34 color choices from the company’s extensive catalog. To kick things off, the G 400d has been outfitted with a new OM656 inline six turbodiesel engine, which produces 330 horsepower. Next, the G 500 thrives with the inclusion of Mercedes’ 422HP biturbo four-liter V8. And finally, the AMG-badged G 63 introduces a 585-horsepower biturbo V8 and Speedshift TCT transmission, helping it to rocket from 0-62 in just under 4.5 seconds. To complement the platforms’ offroad (and on-road) capabilities, Mercedes has also announced the opening of a G-Class Experience Center in Austria — a training ground for drivers who want to test the SUV on varying terrain.
