Well, we may only be a little over halfway through the calendar, but it’s safe to say that 2021 is shaping up to be the year of the EV. From Mercedes and its EQS sedan to Ford and its F-150 Lightning pickup, automakers of all kinds are seeing the writing on the wall and finally cashing in on the prospects of an electrified future.

Not one to be left out of the party, Maserati has just released the first photos of its upcoming battery-powered GranTurismo prototype. At this stage, the Italian marque is keeping the car (and most of its details) under wraps. However, from what images are available, it appears that the new model will feature the same elongated hood and tapered roofline of its predecessors, albeit with some updated styling reminiscent of the MC20. What’s more, it’s being tested with some aerodynamic dish rims, not unlike those found on the Audi E-Tron GT, the Porsche Taycan, and the Tesla Model 3. And while Maserati hasn’t given away any exact details regarding the drivetrain, we do know that the GranTurismo will be its initial model to feature all-electric propulsion.
