2020 was the first year since 2007 to not see the debut of a new Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but they’re more than making up for it in 2021. A whopping four MCU movies are set to be released this year, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which just dropped its first trailer.
Shang-Chi marks Marvel’s first foray into martial arts films, and it’s also the first MCU production to feature a hero of Asian descent as its focus. Based on the Marvel Comics character that first debuted in 1972, Shang-Chi tells the story of the titular “Master of Kung Fu” (Simu Liu), a martial arts prodigy who was trained by his father — a reimagined version of classic villain The Mandarin and leader of the criminal Ten Rings organization — to be an unstoppable fighting force. After having spent a decade apart, dear ol’ dad now wants Shang-Chi to return to take over the family business he has disowned — by any means necessary. The trailer features loads of martial arts action and some top-notch fight scenes, as well as a bit of magic thrown in for good measure. It looks like nothing else in the MCU, but then again, that’s sort of the point. Shang-Chi will debut in theaters on September 3rd, 2021.
