LEGO Releases A 2,314-Piece R2-D2 Set For Lucasfilm’s 50th Anniversary

The relationship between LEGO and Star Wars goes back many years, but it isn’t quite as old as Lucasfilm itself. The production company behind Star Wars turns the big five-oh this year, and to mark the occasion, LEGO is releasing a brand-new and highly intricate R2-D2 construction set.

The LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 construction set consists of 2,314 pieces and is rated for ages 18 and up, suggesting that this is far more in the realm of a serious collectible than a child’s plaything. The build features a number of movie-specific details, including a retractable mid-leg, rotating head, opening (and extendable) front hatches, an adjustable periscope, and (coolest of all) Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber hidden in a compartment in the head, as seen in Return of the Jedi. Once fully constructed, the LEGO droid measures 12.5” tall x 7.5” wide x 6” deep, easily making it substantial enough for display on its buildable stand that features an information plaque, Artoo minifig, and special Lucasfilm 50th anniversary LEGO brick. The LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 will go on sale May 1 for a price of $200.
