Kurt Cobain’s Smashed Aria Pro II Cardinal Guitar

In Seattle on September 22nd, 1990, Nirvana played to a crowd of 1,500 people – the largest they had seen at that time. At the end of their set, driven by the energy of the Motorsports International Garage Show crowd, frontman Kurt Cobain laid waste to his favorite guitar, an Aria Pro II Cardinal. Now, nearly 30 years after that show, the remnants of that very instrument are headed to auction.

Love him or hate him, there’s no denying Cobain’s impact on the world of music. In fact, his band is still widely considered to be one of the best of all time – despite the brevity of their tenure. Having been picked up by Richard Newland, a security guard working at the show, this authentic piece of music history still features the remnants of both guitar strings and the bridge, “Nirvana” carved into what’s left of the neck, and the instrument’s serial number on the neck plate. It’s clearly not in playing condition, but this piece of grunge rock art would look excellent on any true Nirvana fan’s wall. At the time of writing, the current bid is $32,500 – though it’s expected to go for more than $40,000 by the end of the auction.

Purchase: $40,000+
