The fight for the future of autonomous vehicles is in full swing, and Kia isn’t interested in leaving its lot outside of the ring. After admitting two of the segment’s most revered platforms with the Stinger GT and Telluride, the South Korean manufacturer has delved further into the world of luxury automotive with the Futuron SUV — a high-profile concept vehicle that symbolizes the company’s progressive mindset.
The Kia Futuron SUV is a futuristic variant that calls upon space-age styling, a 360-degree cockpit, and diffused surfaces to create something far-removed from the industry’s alternative electric models. It boasts a fully-electric powertrain, housing each of its four motors within the platform’s wheels, and a set of LIDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors to allow for Level-4 autonomy. To contrast the vehicle’s high-set stature, an innovative e-AWD system mimics a low center of gravity to provide immediate responsiveness to driver input, zero-gravity front seats to keep you oriented and focused throughout your drive, and matrix LED lighting technology dubbed “Star Cloud,” offering a distinct light signature that’s exclusive to the Futuron. Kia rounds things out with an interesting cabin architecture that calls upon the company’s newly-devised Dragon Skin scales, which open and close while driving to improve fresh air circulation.
