IWC Looked To Their Racing Heritage For This AMG-Inspired Tourbillon Watch

As the timekeeping partner of Mercedes-AMG’s Formula One team, IWC knows a thing or two about motorsports. And now they’re celebrating their heritage in the sport with the Big Pilot’s Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “IWC Racing.”

The watch contains a number of design cues that were directly inspired by the world of motorsports — especially AMG’s cars. The dial’s outer ring features grooves that are reminiscent of the air intakes of a high-performance engine. The watch’s matte black Ceratanium case and black rhodium-plated movement are accented with yellow-gold highlights that recall the ceramic brake calipers on some AMGs. The power reserve indicator has been designed to resemble a tachometer, and even the strap is lined with Alcantara — a favorite interior material of supercar manufacturers. Inside the watch is one of IWC’s most complicated movements, Calibre 94800, which houses a tourbillon with the brand’s patented integrated constant-force mechanism. The mechanism disengages the escapement from the direct flow of power from the wheel train and transmits completely even impulses of energy to the escape wheel, causing the tourbillon to move in one-second increments for maximum precision. Just 15 examples of the watch are being produced, and it costs considerably more than an AMG GT R.
