As with all major Apple product releases, many were preparing to be disappointed by the release of the iPhone XS. Some were speculating that XS would stand for “Extra Small,” a designation that many were scoffing at. But the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max blew the audience away with huge leaps forward in technology, and a screen size offered at a whopping, never before seen 5.8 inches and 6.5 inches for the XS and XS Max, respectively.
Not only will the screen be big, but it will be the crispest, highest-definition ever offered. The Super Retina display will be a 3.3 million pixel OLED truetone display, with 120 Hz touch sensing and 3D touch technology, along with a million to 1 contrast ratio. Sound quality is hugely enhanced, too, with a wider stereo for a rich audio experience. Both phones will feature better Face ID biometric protection, an infrared camera with flood illuminator, faster algorithms and faster security enclave, giving the iPhone XS and XS Max the most secure facial ID technology ever in a smartphone. The two cameras will come in 12MP, the highest ever for an iPhone, and will offer 60% greater dynamic range on photos than the camera on the iPhone X. Images will be shot on an Apple 6 element lens.
The new generation A12 Bionic chip is the first 7-nanometer chip ever on an iPhone, with 6.9 billion transistors and a six-core CPU and four-core GPU, as well as an eight-core neural engine for super fast machine learning and immense computational power. It will also carry dual-SIM card support with e-SIM technology. This A12 chip is a big deal, and will lend to super fast and super powerful new AR mapping, as the neural engine can operate at five trillion ops. The iPhone can also store up to 512 GB of information, with a core ML that is nine times faster than the previous iPhone while depleting 1/20th of the energy. All of this adds up to one of if not the most impressive iPhones to date. Both models will be offered in gold, silver, and space gray. The iPhone XS starts at $1000, and the XS Max begins at $1,100. Preorders for the phones will start Friday and the phone will ship September 21.
