Too strange to live, too rare to die. Hunter S. Thompson was one of America’s most influential writers, the progenitor of “Gonzo” journalism, a prolific author and political journalist who wrote prodigiously throughout his life. Now, courtesy of Nate D. Sanders Auction house, Thompson’s entire collection of personal and professional letters detailing his work and the sometimes sordid escapades in which he participated will be sold to the highest bidder.

The letters contained in the lot range from intimate personal epistles to descriptions of motorcycles that Thompson was selling at the time. They include famous letters like Thompson’s reaction written on the day of JFK’s assassination, some detailing his time spent with — and the vicious beating he received at the hands of — the notorious biker gang The Hell’s Angels, which he rode with for 1.5 years in writing his first book. The lot contains three drawings and 182 letters, 150 of which have never been published (25 were in the book The Proud Highway: The Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman 1955-1967). The inscrutable Kentuckian writer penned tons of letters about his work and the cultural ongoings of his time. Bidding begins at $110,000.
