There’s an old saying about mopeds that boils down to this: they’re fun until your friends see you riding one. Whether you agree or not, the fact is mopeds don’t get a whole lot of love in the automotive world. They’re not particularly fast and, more often than not, they aren’t all that good looking. And while this offering from Paris-based 56 Motorcycles doesn’t break the mold performance-wise, it certainly shatters the latter notion. In short, it’s beautiful.
Applying the same stripped-down thinking behind the popular cafe racer and scrambler motorcycle styles, these French builders started off with an old Honda C50 Super Cub and transformed it – removing the fairing, ‘sofa’ style seat, original lights, bars, and instruments. They then fit it with a pair of handlebars taken from a mountain bike, cleaned up the engine and threw on a new coat of paint, and refit it with a set of rear shocks and a Keihn carburetor. They even went so far as to include a retro headlight to tie together the old-school styling and have shortened the rear fender – giving greater clearance to the knobby tires. All-in-all, this is one moped we’d certainly not be embarrassed to ride. [Purchase]
