It’s pretty big news in the watch world any time Hodinkee does a collaboration with a watchmaker, and that’s especially true when it does so with a brand as storied as TAG Heuer. The two companies have just unveiled their first joint-project since 2017 in the form of the TAG Heuer Carrera ‘Dato’ Limited Edition For Hodinkee, and it looks like another winner.
The watch is a reimagining of the Heuer Carrera Dato ref. 3147N from the 1960s and mimics that model’s highly-unique design language. The original Dato featured a black dial with a single white subdial at the 3 o’clock position measuring chronograph minutes and an unusual date window at 9 o’clock. Hodinkee’s updated version looks largely the same but has updated the minutes register to track up to 30 minutes rather than the 45 of the original. TAG Heuer had to rework their flagship in-house Calibre Heuer 02 movement to work with the bizarre dial layout, but it looks like it was worth the effort. The vintage cues continue in the overall style and size of the watch, with a 39mm “glassbox” case keeping things retro and modest. The Carrera Dato is priced at $7,250, with a limited run of 250 pieces.
