It’s a rare and noteworthy event any time a distiller bottles an especially old spirit, but if there’s an interesting story behind it, the release is even more enticing. That’s the story here, as the folks at Cask 88 have just unveiled a 50-year-old single malt Glenlivet scotch from the personal collection of Abe Rosenberg.

For those who aren’t familiar, Abe Rosenberg was a legendary whisky importer who brought tons of noteworthy spirits to the United States in the post-Prohibition era. And over the course of his career, he personally collected around 4,000 single casks. This special release came from one of those casks and it is, simply put, magnificent. Dark in its appearance, rich and sweet in its nose, and exceedingly deep and smooth in its flavors, this rarified half-century-old spirit does not come cheap — retailing for just under $9,000 a bottle. We just wish the late Abe Rosenberg was still around to enjoy it himself.

Purchase: $9,000
