Ryan Reynolds Is A Video Game NPC Having An Existential Crisis In ‘Free Guy’

With the rise in popularity of MMORPGs, it’s frankly unsurprising that the film industry has tapped into this once-niche space with movies like Ready Player One, though 20th Century Fox has put a decidedly new spin on the topic with its upcoming film, Free Guy.

The forthcoming film stars Ryan Reynolds, who plays a bank teller that unwittingly discovers that he’s a character in a sprawling open-world multiplayer video game. Boasting a similar vibe to Wreck-It Ralph, albeit aimed at a slightly more mature audience, Free Guy sports a cast that includes Taika Waititi, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Matty Cardarople, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Lil Rel Howery, just to name a few. Directed by Shawn Levy of Arrival and Stranger Things fame, the movie lightheartedly explores violence and a variety of other topics, though a comedic lens. On top of the ensemble cast, the movie also features a variety of noteworthy cars, and a selection of Ducati motorcycles. Though its official rating has yet to be announced, Free Guy is scheduled for a release on December 11, 2020.
