Despite being founded all the way back in 1974, it wasn’t until fairly recently that Fjällräven’s Kånken bag became widely embraced by the fashion and style realm, with ample sales prompting the Swedish outdoor brand to develop a wide range of Kånken bags using a host of noteworthy constructions. Hot on the heels of Fjällräven’s recycled “RE-WOOL” Kånken lineup, the Örnsköldsvik outfit has now revealed the next step in the bag’s evolution with the announcement of the forthcoming Fjällräven Tree-Kånken.
Weighing less than a pound, the Tree-Kånken boasts a primary construction and lining made using an innovative, entirely bio-based fabric that’s composed of 100% lyocell and derived from spruce and pine trees sustainably grown in Fjällräven’s native northern Sweden. This alternative to traditional fossil-based materials manages to recycle 91% of the water used in the construction process, as well as a cool 99.6% of the chemicals used in its production. The bag is also treated with a water-based PU coating that’s been infused with a solvent and fluorocarbon-free wax that allows the Tree-Kånken to form a unique patina over time with regular use. What’s more, this envelope-pushing design ultimately earned Fjällräven a prestigious Scandinavian Outdoor Award and a nomination for Outdoor Retailer’s upcoming Innovation Awards. Scheduled for a release in August of 2021, the Fjällräven Tree-Kånken will be priced at around $115.
