It’s something that’s said every time a new Fast & Furious movie is released, but it bears repeating again: the crew has come a long way from stealing VCRs in tuned Honda Civics. That’s especially evident in the new trailer for Fast & Furious 9, as it literally blasts characters to space in a rocket-powered car.
The space-bound scene happens at the end of the trailer and is more of a tease than anything. In it, we see Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris) donning duct-tape reinforced spacesuits in a rocket-powered car that blasts off the top of an airplane. And as ridiculous as that is, it’s just a drop in the bucket of over-the-top nonsense that is this trailer. We’ve also got a somersaulting armored 16-wheeler, powerful magnets slinging trucks like Hot Wheels, and fight scenes between Dom (Vin Diesel) and his secret brother Jakob (John Cena) that see them crashing through more buildings than Godzilla and Kong. Allegedly, the movie has a plot — something to do with returning villain Cypher (Charlize Theron) seeking revenge on Dom — but let’s be honest: nobody’s watching this insane spectacle for the character drama.
